Striking SUA students sent home

Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) students were last evening sent home after they defied orders to end their eight-day boycott and resume classes.
As soon as the order to vacate university premises was issued, the crack Field Force Unit (FFU) was deployed at the campus by the government to enforce the order amid fears the students would resort to rampaging.
However, the students at the Morogoro-based university left peacefully.
The students were given just two hours to vacate the campus after they failed to obey orders to resume classes.
The students had insisted on their expelled colleagues being reinstated and disciplining of lecturers accused of failing students in examinations before relenting.
A source at SUA told The Guardian that the FFU stormed into the Mazimbu campus at around 4.00pm to flush out students as soon as the acting vice-chancellor, Prof Peter Msola, announced the indefinite closure of the university.
In a statement, the VC said, “You are ordered to leave the campus within two hours. We will inform you of the dates of your return through the media.”
Morogoro Regional Police Commander Steven Ngowi confirmed, by telephone, that FFU had been deployed at the campus to ensure the students left peacefully.
“The FFU were not there to scare anybody. What we wanted to do was to protect government property destroyed had violence broken out,” he said, adding that “there was no violence and the students left the campus peacefully.”
A students leader said they were not surprised by their suspension and that it was an ideal opportunity to the university management to put its act together.
“It is a good opportunity for the university authorities to look into our grievances,” the student leader said.

As the student left, they still insisted on the reinstatement of all the 35 students who had been expelled for inciting their colleagues to strike.
As has been the case since the strike began last week, the vice chancellor was yesterday unavailable to field questions from the media.
